Become part of our team!

Aalen University of Applied Sciences is one of the most research-intensive universities of applied sciences in Germany. Regionally, nationally and internationally, Aalen University has been a reliable partner for over 60 years - for students, staff and professors, for local authorities, the business community and more than 130 collaborating partners around the world. We greatly value modern and future-oriented teaching, because the combination of theory and practice is crucial for us.

The PhD-position is located at the Materials Research Institute (IMFAA) at Aalen University of Applied Sciences and is part of a collaborative research project with several partners from industry and academia. It aims to engineer the microstructure of composite cathodes and the cathode–separator interface to establish continuous ionic and electronic pathways, form stable solid-solid interfaces, and reduce chemo-mechanical stresses during operation. Modern laborato-ries equipped to a high standard are available for carrying out your research work.

Aalen University would like to fill the following position at the Institute of Materials Research (IMFAA) at the earliest pos-sible date:

PhD student - All Solid State Batteries (ASSB) (m/f/d) - 26-04-02

- Part-time 70% (27,65 hrs/week.) -

Your tasks:

  • You conduct research on novel approaches for solid-state composite cathodes with tailored microstructures, for example with graded architecture or microstructured surfaces.
  • You develop new process routes for electrode fabrication on a laboratory scale.
  • You comprehensively characterize the material properties and microstructure of the electrodes, for example using SEM, FIB-SEM, EDX, XRD or Raman spectroscopy.
  • You perform detailed analyses of the electrochemical properties, for example using EIS, cell performance measurements and ageing studies.
  • You develop empirical models to describe the interrelationships between process, structure and properties.
  • For your research activities, you will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and office space in our research buildings.

Your profile:

  • You hold an excellent master’s degree and/or a doctoral degree in chemistry, materials science/materials engineering, engineering, physics or a related field.
  • You have experience with battery materials and cell technology, in particular in the field of solid-state batteries.
  • You have experimental experience with powder, slurry and coating processes and are familiar with material characterization techniques (for example SEM, EDX, XRD) as well as the electrochemical characterization of battery materials.
  • You have very good IT skills; experience with Python, Matlab or Origin is an advantage.
  • You have German language skills at native level (at least B2, preferably C1) and are able to confidently conduct project meetings and prepare project reports in German.
